New Zealand captain Kane Williamson once again failed to deliver in the 2024 T20 World Cup, this time in the ongoing match against the West Indies. The right-hander departed for just one run off two deliveries, thanks to a brilliant catch from wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran on the second attempt.

The dismissal came in the seventh over of the Kiwis' run chase. Guadkesh Motie bowled a short delivery outside off that got extra bounce. Williamson went for a cut shot but ended up with a thick top edge that hit Pooran on the chest. The keeper used his presence of mind to hang on to the catch on the rebound within a fraction of a second.

Williamson had managed nine runs off 13 deliveries in his previous outing against Afghanistan in their T20 World Cup opener. The Kiwis lost that game by 84 runs.

West Indies set New Zealand a 150-run target in the 2024 T20 World Cup match

A fighting knock from Sherfane Rutherford helped West Indies post 149/9 against New Zealand. The left-handed batter came out when the co-hosts were reeling at 22/4 after 5.4 overs. He scored an unbeaten 68 off 39 with the help of six maximums and two boundaries. Nicholas Pooran, Akeal Hosein, Andre Russell, and Romario Shephard also chipped in with crucial contributions.

Trent Boult starred with the ball for the Kiwis, returning with figures of 3/16, while Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson bagged two wickets apiece. James Neesham and Mitchell Santner also took one wicket each.

In response, the Kiwis are reeling at 73/5 after 13 overs, with James Neesham and Glenn Phillips at the crease. Gudakesh Motie has bagged three wickets in his three overs for the Windies so far.

West Indies won their first two games against Papua New Guinea and Uganda by five wickets and 134 runs, respectively. A win over New Zealand will help them qualify for the Super 8 stage.
