The shot came during the 38thover of England’s first innings. Joseph bowled a length ball outside off and Smith nailed his pull shot to perfection over the mid-wicket.

The crowd erupted in joy and Stokes looked in awe at the youngster’s hitting ability. The ball was retrieved, but the umpires changed it after an inspection because it was damaged.

“I am learning on the job” – Jamie Smith on his role in England’s Test team

Jamie Smith recently opened up on his role in England’s Test team. The youngster, who bats at No. 4 or 5 for Surrey instead of No. 7 for England, said that he is a work in progress. He told reporters during the opening (debut) Test (via BBC):

"Batting seven and keeping is a new role for me, but I'm happy to adapt. Batting with the tail is new for me as well, so I am learning on the job a bit."

Speaking of the match, England were 218/6 after 46 overs in their first innings, with Joe Root (83 off 119) and Jamie Smith (28 off 33) at the crease. Ben Stokes was the last batter to be dismissed, caught by Kraigg Brathwaite at square leg off Joseph.

Opting to bat first, West Indies posted 282 in their first innings. Captain Brathwaite, Jason Holder, and Joshua Da Silva chipped in with scores of 61 (86), 59 (112) and 49 (99), respectively.
