England keeper-batter Jamie Smith missed out on a well-deserved century on Day 2 of the 3rd Test match against the West Indies at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The 24-year-old came to bat in the 36th over when England captain Ben Stokes got out on 54 off 69 balls. Stokes’ wicket left his side at 169/6 in 35.2 overs while still trailing by 113 runs.

Smith, who was playing his third test, first stitched together a 62-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Joe Root. Then, along with Chris Woakes, the keeper-batter put on a 106-run partnership for the eighth wicket to put England in a commanding position.

The right-handed batter got to his second Test fifty off 60 balls. He continued playing some good cricket before he departed on 95.

Shamar Joseph bowled an off-cutter on the second ball of the 70th over that kept low and snuck past Smith's underedge as he tried to pull.

Here’s the video of the dismissal:

England scored 374 runs in their first inning, taking a lead of 94 runs. At the time of writing, the West Indies were 27/2 after 11 overs in their second innings, still trailing by 67 runs. Mikyle Louis (16*) and Alick Athanaze (1,) were at the crease for visitors.

A brilliant display with the bat on Day 2 helped England take the first-inning lead

England didn't have the best start on Day 2, as they lost Ollie Pope (10) and Harry Brook (2) early. Joe Root and Ben Stokes (54) stitched together an important 115-run stand for the sixth wicket to bring things on track for the hosts.

Root scored 87 off 124 balls and also became the second batter after Sir Alastair Cook to score 12,000 Test runs for England.

Later, it was Jamie Smith (95) and Chris Woakes (62) who helped England take a decent first-inning lead as the hosts scored 376 runs. Alzarri Joseph was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors, taking four wickets.
