Sri Lanka opener Dimuth Karunaratne missed out on a well-deserved half-century as he got run out against New Zealand in the second Test in Galle on Day 1 (Thursday, September 26). The left-handed batter walked back for 46 runs off 109 balls, a knock laced with four boundaries.
The dismissal came in the 40th over of Sri Lanka’s first innings. Mitchell Santner bowled a full-length ball and Karunaratne guided it towards mid-wicket. Glenn Phillips put up a dive to stop the ball before throwing it back to the striker’s end. Karunaratne ran for two while Chandimal had his eyes on the ball.
Tom Latham collected the ball and completed a sharp run-out. The batter looked angry with his batting partner after getting run out.

Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne share 122-run partnership after early blow in SL vs NZ 2nd Test
Dinesh Chandimal’s century and his 122-run partnership with Dimuth Karunaratne helped Sri Lanka bounce back after New Zealand skipper Tim Southee sent back Pathum Nissanka for just 1.
At the time of writing, the hosts were 194/2 at Tea, with Chandimal (106 off 183) and Angelo Mathews (35 off 79) at the crease.
Sri Lanka are leading the two-match Test series 1-0 following their 63-run win over New Zealand in the first Test. Prabath Jayasuriya picked up nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings. Kamindu Mendis also slammed a century for the hosts.
The Islanders are searching for their first Test series win against New Zealand at home since 2009 where they won by 2-0 in the two-match Test series. The previous home series against the Kiwis ended in a 1-1 draw in 2019. On the other hand, the Tim Southee-led side would look to bounce back by winning the second Test.
Sri Lanka and New Zealand are currently placed third and fourth, respectively, in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. India and Australia are the top two on the list.
