Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Azmatullah Omarzai survived an easy run out in the 2024 T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent on Monday, June 24. Bangladesh's Rishad Hossain missed an easy run-out chance with the two batters first charging toward the striker’s end before trying to run at the bowler’s end.

The mixup came during the 16th over of Afghanistan’s innings. Mustafizur Rahman bowled a length ball outside off and Gurbaz cut it to Rishad at backward point. The fielder fumbled to pick up the ball as the two batters took off for the run.

Gurbaz watched the ball and ran back but Azmatullah continued to run. The missed opportunity allowed Gurbaz to complete the run by rushing towards the non-striker’s end as Azmatullah returned to the striker’s end.

Interestingly, Azmatullah departed on the next ball he faced, caught behind by wicketkeeper Litton Das.

Afghanistan set a 116-run target for Bangladesh in 2024 T20 World Cup Super-8 clash; Rain interrupts play

A fighting performance from Rahmanullah Gurbaz helped Afghanistan reach 115/5 against Bangladesh in the 2024 T20 World Cup Super-8 clash before rain played a spoilsport.

Gurbaz starred with the bat, scoring 43 runs off 55 balls with the help of one six and three boundaries. Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai also chipped in with 18 (29) and 10 (12), respectively. Captain Rashid Khan provided the final flourish, scoring an unbeaten 19 off 10 deliveries, including three sixes.

Rishad Hossain starred with the ball for Bangladesh, returning with figures of 3/26, while Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman bagged one wicket apiece.

Bangladesh must chase the target in 12.1 overs to secure a place in the semifinals. Australia will progress if Bangladesh beat Afghanistan but fail to achieve the target in the above-mentioned overs.

Afghanistan will qualify for the semi-finals if they beat Bangladesh or if the match gets abandoned due to rain.
