Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was off to an impressive start with the bat on Day 1 of the side's Test series opener against Bangladesh in Chennai on Thursday, September 19. The southpaw walked out to bat at No. 5 when the hosts were reeling at 34/3 in 9.2 overs.

Pant countered the Bangladeshi bowlers with great aplomb despite the tremendous pressure. He hit six fours and accumulated 39 runs off 52 balls.

While Pant seemed set for a big score, he failed to capitalize, throwing his wicket away by playing a loose shot in the 26th over. Pant played a cut shot off pacer Hasan Mahmud's bowling that raced away for a four.

However, Pant went for yet another attacking shot on the subsequent delivery. He edged it straight to the wicketkeeper and had to walk back. Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir was visibly upset with the 26-year-old's shot selection and shook his head in disappointment.

You can watch the video of Gambhir's reaction below:

It is worth mentioning that Hasan Mahmud dismissed India's top-order big guns Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli early in the morning session. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant steadied the ship for the Men in Blue with their 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Rishabh Pant returned to India's Test team after a gap of almost two years

Rishabh Pant was involved in a horrific car crash in December 2022. He sustained multiple injuries in the accident, forcing him to remain on the sidelines for close to 18 months.

His comeback to international cricket came at the 2024 T20 World Cup. He was a pivotal cog in India's title-winning campaign, finishing as the third-highest run-getter for his side in the event with 171 runs across eight innings.

Pant returned to India's Test team after being picked for the ongoing Test series opener against Bangladesh. His last appearance in the format came during an away series in Bangladesh just days before his car accident.
