England captain Ben Stokes looked animated with his celebrations after providing the much-needed breakthrough against the West Indies on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Friday, July 19.

With the wicket, Stokes broke the fourth-wicket partnership between Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge by dismissing the former. Athanaze got out for 82 runs off 99 balls, missing out on a well-deserved century. It was Stokes' first wicket of the game.

The dismissal came in the 62nd over of England’s innings. Stokes bowled a full-length ball on off and Athanaze went for a drive towards cover but ended up with an edge that carried to Harry Brook at gully. The pacer looked extremely pumped up in his celebrations as the hosts waited over 36 overs for the wicket.

Kavem Hodge and Alick Athanaze help West Indies fightback against Ben Stokes and Co. on Day 2

A fighting batting display from Kavem Hodge and Alick Athanaze helped West Indies fight back against Ben Stokes-led England on Day 2.

At the time of writing, the visitors were 283/4 after 65.4 overs, with Hodge (101 off 143) and Jason Holder at the crease. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite also chipped in with 48 off 72, comprising eight boundaries

Asked to bat first, the hosts put up 416 in their first innings. Ollie Pope top scored with 121 off 167 with the help of one six and 15 boundaries. Ben Duckett and Ben Stokes chipped in with scores of 71 (59) and 69 (104). Meanwhile, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, and Chris Woakes contributed in their 30s.

Alzarri Joseph was the pick of WI bowlers, returning with three wickets, while Jayden Seales, Kevin Sinclair, and Kavem Hodge bagged two each.

England are leading the three-match Test series 1-0, having the opening game against Windies by an innings and 114 runs at Lord’s.
