Team India's vice-captain Shubman Gill looked in fine touch in the side's T20I series opener against Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, July 27. The opening batter showed positive intent in the powerplay, helping the visitors get off to a flying start.
Gill scored 34 runs off just 16 deliveries at a strike rate of 212.50. He struck six fours and a solitary six during his stay at the crease. The youngster tried to make the most of the final over of the powerplay, sending the penultimate delivery for maximum over the deep mid-wicket fence.
However, he perished on the very next delivery while trying to play yet another attacking shot. Gill was undone by Dilshan Madushanka's change of pace. The batter was a bit early on the shot and failed to get the desired connection.
There was some hesitation from Asitha Fernando, who was stationed at mid-on. He ultimately went for it and completed a wonderful catch.

While Sri Lanka ended the powerplay on a positive note, it were the Indian openers who dominated the proceedings in the first six overs with their aggressive approach.

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field first in the 1st T20I of the ongoing three-match series. Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill made the most of the field restrictions, taking the bowlers to the cleaners in the powerplay.
While Gill chipped in with an impactful 34-run knock, Jaiswal scored 40 runs off 21 balls with the help of five fours and two sixes. Sri Lanka bounced back after India's early onslaught, dismissing the two openers off successive deliveries.
Shubman Gill was out on the last ball of the sixth over. Jaiswal was dismissed on the very next delivery. The southpaw was stumped off Wanindu Hasaranga's bowling.
