The 25th encounter of the 2024 Tamil Nadu Premier League was a close game. The Lyca Kovai Kings emerged on top of the Salem Spartans by a slender one-wicket victory on Saturday, July 27.

Meanwhile, the 26th game of the season saw the NPR College Ground, Dindigul, host a riveting encounter between IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans and the Trichy Grand Cholas. The Tiruppur Tamizhans won the game by 27 runs.

The Lyca Kovai Kings, after a thrilling victory over the Salem Spartans, are first on the points table with six wins in seven matches. They have gathered 12 points so far this season with a net run rate of +0.728. IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans are second on the points table after the completion of 26 games this season. Having won four and lost three matches, the Tamizhans have scored eight points with a healthy net run rate of +0.677.

The Chepauk Super Gillies and the Dindigul Dragons too have scored eight points in six games each this season. They occupy the third and fourth positions with net run rates of +0.511 and +0.333, respectively.

Trichy Grand Cholas are fifth on the table with six points. Meanwhile, the Nellai Royal Kings have won two games so far and are sixth on the leaderboard with a net run rate of -0.160. The Siechem Madurai Panthers and the Salem Spartans have won just one game each this season. They languish at the bottom of the points table with three and two points each in the seventh and eighth places, respectively.


Kings eke out a one-wicket win over Salem; Tiruppur demolishes Trichy by 47 runs

The Lyca Kovai Kings elected to field first in the first game of the day against the Salem Spartans. Salem batters Vishal Vaidya (36 off 33), Rajendran Vivek (43 off 30), and Harish Kumar (42* off 19) put in good displays. This saw them post a first-innings total of 171/4 in 20 overs. Jhathavedh Subramanyam (2 off 16) was the highest wicket-taker for the Lyca Kovai Kings.

Chasing 172, the Kovai Kings found able support in opener S Sujay (48 off 39). Sujay’s innings were laced with five boundaries and one six. Except for him, no other batter made a mark as the Kovai Kings lost wickets in quick succession.

However, skipper Shahrukh Khan scored a quickfire 50 off just 18 deliveries. His knock ensured the Lyca Kovai Kings won this encounter by a slender margin of one wicket and no balls to spare. Salem Spartans bowler M Poiyamozhi’s four-wicket haul went in vain as they ended up on the losing side.

In the second match of the day, the Tiruppur Tamizhans posted a total of 169/8 against the Trichy Grand Cholas in 20 overs. It came thanks to contributions from Mann Bafna (50 off 35) and S Ganesh (39 off 37). V Athisayaraj Davidson took 4/32 in four overs for the Grand Cholas.

In reply, the Trichy-based franchise could not get going from a batting perspective. They were bundled out for a mere 122 in just 16.5 overs, handing Tiruppur a 47-run victory. P Nirmal Kumar (46 off 32) top-scored for the Grand Cholas, while T Natarajan and Ajith Ram took three wickets each for the Tiruppur Tamizhans.
