Tim Southee surpasses Virender Sehwag on the all-time list for most sixes in Test cricket during IND vs NZ 2024 1st Test

New Zealand's Tim Southee has surpassed former Indian batter Virender Sehwag on the all-time list for most sixes in Test cricket. Sehwag played 104 Tests for India, scoring 8,586 runs at a strike rate of 82.23, with 32 fifties and 23 centuries. He hit 91 sixes in his Test career.

Southee achieved the milestone on Day 3 of the Test against India at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, October 18. Coming in at No. 9, he scored 65 runs off 73 balls, including five fours and four sixes.

Before the match, Southee had hit 89 sixes in his Test career, and with his performance in this game, he brought his total to 93, surpassing Sehwag's record. Southee has now scored 2,180 runs in 103 Tests at a strike rate of 82.66 with seven fifties to his name.

Meanwhile, England Test captain Ben Stokes tops the list with 131 sixes in 106 Tests. In second place is former New Zealand captain and current England Test coach Brendon McCullum, who hit 107 sixes in his 101-match career.

Adam Gilchrist follows in third with 100 sixes, while Chris Gayle is fourth with 98, and Jacques Kallis rounds out the top five with 97 sixes.


Tim Southee and Rachin Ravindra’s partnership takes New Zealand's lead past 300 in the Test against India

Indian bowlers started Day 3 on a bright note, reducing the visitors from 193-3 to 233-7.

However, Tim Southee and Rachin Ravindra formed a 137-run partnership for the eighth wicket off just 132 balls. Southee scored 65 runs off 73 balls, while Rachin brought up his century in the process.

At the time of writing, the Kiwis were at 376-8 after 89 overs, leading by 330 runs, with Rachin (110) and Ajaz Patel (4) at the crease. Earlier in the game, the hosts were bundled out for 46, their third-lowest total in Test history.
