The Rose Bowl in Southampton was home to the second game of the 2024 Hundred match between the Southern Brave and the London Spirit on Thursday, July 25. In a low-scoring affair, the Southern Brave emerged victorious, chasing down their target with seven wickets and 11 deliveries to spare.

With the completion of just two games, the tournament is still in its early stages. Let's take a look at the points table:

The Oval Invincibles started the season with a win over Birmingham Phoenix. Hence they occupy the first position with two points and a more than healthy net run rate of +2.289. In the second position are the Southern Brave. They defeated the London Spirit with a margin of almost a dozen deliveries, and their net run rate of (+0.909) is also on an upward trend.

The London Spirit, after their loss against the Southern Brave, are in third place with one loss in one game and a net run rate of -0.909. Birmingham Phoenix languishes in the fourth position, courtesy of a loss against the table toppers Invincibles with zero points and a net run rate of -2.289 after one game.

Southern “Brave” past the London Spirit by seven wickets

London Spirit, after winning the toss against the Southern Brave, elected to bat first, a decision contrary to the usual template followed by teams in the shorter format. Batting at no. 4, skipper Dan Lawrence played a solid 38-run knock. Lawrence’s 30-ball inning was laced with three boundaries as he scored his runs at a strike rate of 126.66.

But Liam Dawson’s quickfire 45* propelled the “Spirits” of the London-based franchise as they ended the first 20 overs with a score of 138/9. Craig Overton led the Brave’s bowling attack as he scalped 3/16 in just 20 deliveries, while Tymal Mills and Chris Jordan ended up picking two wickets apiece.

The chase was a walk in the park for the Southern Brave thanks to contributions from Daniel Hughes (45 off 30), skipper James Vince (56 off 35), and Leus du Plooy (22* off 19), as they won the game by seven wickets and 11 deliveries to spare. Nathan Ellis, Ravi Bopara, and Dan Lawrence took wickets each for the Spirits.
