Birmingham Phoenix defeated Trent Rockets by six wickets in match 28 of The Hundred Men’s 2024 season on Monday, August 12, at Edgbaston. With the win, Birmingham Phoenix swapped places with Northern Superchargers to climb to number three on the eight-team points table.

The Phoenix have so far accumulated 10 points courtesy of five wins from seven fixtures and an NRR of 0.324.

Southern Brave, also with 10 points from seven matches, occupy second rank on the table courtesy of a superior NRR of 0.595. Defending champions Oval Invincibles continue to top The Hundred Men’s 2024 points table with six wins in seven matches.

Northern Superchargers slipped to number four after the 28th match of the tournament. Trent Rockets with six points and Welsh Fire with five points take the subsequent two slots on the points ladder. Struggling Manchester Originals and London Spirit claim the final two places on the table, having secured just a solitary win from seven attempts at dismal NRRs of -0.823 and -0.884 respectively.

Tim Southee takes five in dominant Phoenix win

Birmingham Phoenix fast bowler Tim Southee knocked over Tom Banton and Joe Root to jolt Trent Rockets early in the innings. Chris Wood also seized two wickets with the new-ball as Rockets slipped to 22/4 at one stage.

Tom Alsop, at number four, counterattacked with 51 runs off 37 balls to take his team past the 100-run mark alongside Imad Wasim (29 runs off 29 balls). However, Southee later returned to disrupt the Rockets’ momentum once again by picking up three quick wickets to bag figures of 5/12. Trent Rockets were eventually bundled out for just 118 in 100 balls, an innings where 13 extras turned out to be their third biggest benefactor after Alsop’s 51 and Imad’s 29.

In response, Birmingham Phoenix hunted down their 119-run target in just 93 balls at the expense of four wickets. After losing two wickets in succession to John Turner (2/17), Liam Livingstone and Jacob Bethell punched out crafty unbeaten 30s to steer their team to a remarkable win.
