Defending champions Oval Invincibles escaped with a 10-run win over Welsh Fire in a low-scoring The Hundred Men’s 2024 thriller on Sunday, July 28 at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens.

Batting first, Oval Invincibles lost opener Dawid Malan and No. 3 Tawanda Muyeye to David Willey (2/23) early in the innings. Will Jacks hit a 15-ball 25 at the top before holding out to Mason Crane off Josh Little. Joining forces at 46/4, Sam Curran (20 off 21 balls) and Donovan Ferreira (30 off 23 balls) unfurled handy knocks to take Oval Invincibles at the brink of the 100-run mark.

However, some tight bowling in the death overs by David Payne (2/20) and Jake Ball (3/24) ensured the Invincibles' charge was restricted to 113/9 from 100 balls.

In the run-chase, Oval Invincibles fast bowlers Spencer Johnson and Sam Curran rocked Welsh Fire early by getting rid of dangermen Jonny Bairstow and Joe Clarke. Tom Kohler-Cadmore (22 off 33 balls) found some rhythm with captain Tom Abell before both were knocked over by Adam Zampa as Welsh Fire slipped to 51/5. Zampa also dismissed David Willey a while later to bag figures of 3/24.

David Payne clubbed 28 off 15 balls but his late resistance made little difference amidst Nathan Sowter (2/12) and Zampa’s brilliant 20-ball spells. They eventually restricted Welsh Fire to 103/8 to secure a 10-run win for the Oval Invincibles.
