Team India will take part in the 2024 Hong Kong Sixes tournament for the first time since 2012. The announcement was made by Hong Kong Cricket's official account on social media platform X.

The Hong Kong Sixes was started in 1992 and the early 2000s saw a rise in popularity of the tournament. Big names such as Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, MS Dhoni and Shoaib Malik are among those to have played in the tournament.

The last edition took place in 2017 after which it was scrapped owing to a lack of sponsorship. This edition will feature 12 teams, along with hosts Hong Kong, split across two groups with six-a-side matches and five-over innings.

Cricket Hong Kong took to their official X account and posted the following announcement:

South Africa are the defending champions of the tournament, beating Pakistan by two wickets to win their fifth title. The 2024 edition of the tournament will be played from November 1-3.

Team India last played in Hong Kong Sixes back in 2012

Team India sent an eight-man delegation for the Hong Kong Sixes back in 2012. The team was led by Shafiq Khan, a first-class cricketer who played for Haryana in the Ranji Trophy. The team also featured current Hong Kong cricketer, Kinchit Shah.

India were placed in Pool B alongside Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. They played three matches and could only manage a win over the Netherlands, qualifying for the Plate Semi-Final.

They came up against Australia, who beat them by 16 runs and finished eighth on the overall points table, with South Africa winning the tournament. India have, however, tasted success in this tournament, winning the 2005 edition.
