English cricketing legend Sir Geoffery Boycott underwent a successful surgery to treat his throat cancer on Thursday, July 18, according to a statement by his daughter Emma Boycott. She said the operation took three hours but "went well".

The 83-year-old had revealed the diagnosis of a second throat cancer a couple of weeks ago. He was first diagnosed with the disease in 2002 at the age of 62.

"Just to let everyone know my Father, Geoffrey, has successfully come out of surgery this evening after a 3 hour operation to remove his throat cancer. Yet to see him but surgeon says it went well. He asked that I post an update," Emma wrote on the cricketer's X account.

In 2002, the doctors had reportedly told Boycott that he only had a few months to live if he did not undergo treatment. He recovered after 35 chemotherapy sessions. When releasing the statement of the cancer's return, Boycott had said that he required treatment and luck to beat it again.

“In the last few weeks I have had an MRI Scan, CT Scan, a PET Scan and two biopsies and it has now been confirmed I have throat cancer and will require an operation. From past experience I realise that to overcome cancer a second time I will need excellent medical treatment and quite a bit of luck and even if the operation is successful every cancer patient knows they have to live with the possibility of it returning. So I will just get on with it and hope for the best,” he had said, as per a statement quoted by The Telegraph.

Emma and Boycott's wife Rachael have always supported the legend. They reportedly played a big role in his recovery even during his first treatment.

Boycott's legendary cricket career

Boycott played 108 Tests for England between 1964 and 1982, scoring 8,114 runs, including 22 centuries, and was considered one of the best of his generation.

He also scored around 50,000 first-class runs, including an astonishing 151 centuries.
