Ricky Ponting parts ways with Delhi Capitals as head coach ahead of IPL 2025

In a massive development ahead of IPL 2025, Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has parted ways with the franchise. The Capitals confirmed the same on Saturday (July 13).

The franchise's official social media handles posted a lengthy and emotional message to thank the ex-Australian captain for all his contributions.

The two-time ODI World Cup-winning skipper joined the Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) ahead of the 2018 edition. Ponting took over from Paddy Upton and Rahul Dravid, coming in with a reputation of leading the Mumbai Indians to their second IPL title in 2015.

However, the Mumbai-based franchise didn't renew his two-year contract. The Tasmanian had also worked with Mumbai as an advisory role in 2014, a year after joining the franchise as a player.

In his seven years as coach, the veteran's best performance as coach of the Capitals, when they emerged as a runner-up.

As far as the former right-hander's playing career in IPL goes, he featured for the Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, plying his trade only in 10 matches from 2008-2013.

With Rishabh Pant returning as captain after missing the previous season, the Capitals were still inconsistent in IPL 2024, losing and winning seven matches each. As a result, they failed to reach the playoffs and finished sixth in the table.

The 49-year-old joined as the coach of the Washington Freedom ahead of the 2nd season of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024, joining forces with his countrymen in Steven Smith, Travis Head, and Glenn Maxwell.

Sourav Ganguly is reportedly in contention to take over as coach from the former Aussie great as the coach of the Capitals.
