"Just playing good cricket isn't enough" - Amit Mishra on his uncertain playing future under MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli

Veteran India spinner Amit Mishra, who played his last ODI game in 2016 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy and his last Test match the same year under Virat Kohli's leadership, has claimed that he didn’t have clarity on why he wasn't getting much playing time under these captains.

During an interview with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube show ‘Unplugged,' Mishra asserted that while playing good cricket is important, it is not sufficient for team selection.

"Being liked matters a lot in team selection. Just playing good cricket isn't enough. The captain always decides the Playing XI. I had an excellent rapport with MS Dhoni. I asked him twice why I wasn't getting picked, he told me that I don't fit the combination I was told that I was being given a rest. I never asked for it. I hadn't even played 10 Test matches by then, why would I ask for a rest or break?" he said.

The 41-year-old was last seen in action during the 2024 IPL for the Lucknow Super Giants.
