On Sunday, July 7, 2024, Washington Freedom and MI New York squared off in the third match of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024. Despite losing against Washington Freedom, MI New York continues to sit at the top of the MLC 2024 points table with a net run rate (NRR) of +1.472.

Saurabh Netravalkar and Steve Smith guide Washington to victory in their season-opener

MI New York were asked to bat first and set a 155-run target. Nicholas Pooran was the top scorer with a brilliant 44 off 30 balls, followed by Rashid Khan with 31 and Ruben Clinton with 28. Anrich Nortje contributed a quick 14 runs from nine balls, hitting two fours and one six.

For Washington Freedom, Saurabh Netravalkar and Justin Dill took three wickets each, while Lockie Ferguson, Glenn Maxwell, and Marco Jansen each claimed one wicket.

As the game progressed, rain interrupted play after 7.4 overs, with Washington at 55-1, ahead of the DLS par score of 51. The match was eventually called off, and Washington won by four runs via the DLS method.

Steven Smith single-handedly led the chase with an unbeaten 46 off 28 balls, including four fours and three sixes. Ehsan Adil took the solitary wicket of Travis Head for New York.

Saurabh Netravalkar of Washington Freedom was named Player of the Match for an outstanding bowling effort.
