England pacer Mark Wood produced one of the most devastating spells of fast bowling after lunch on Day 4 of the third and final Test against the West Indies at Edgbaston. After a two-wicket first innings, the 34-year-old was wicketless after the first session of the fourth day.

However, he sprung to life with an incredible spell of 5/9 in six overs in the second session to pick up the final five wickets of the West Indian innings. The visitors succumbed to Wood's exceptional pace and reverse swing combination to collapse from 156/5 to 175 all-out.

The speedster removed the impressive wicket-keeper batter Joshua Da Silva LBW and cleaned up Alzarri Joseph in his next over. Wood then dislodged the well-set Kavem Hodge for 55 and dismissed the final two batters in the same over to capture his fifer.

It was his fifth five-wicket haul in 36 Tests and took his overall tally for the series to nine scalps in two games.

Fans on Twitter hailed Wood for his scintillating spell of fast-bowling with the following reactions:

Fans continued praising Wood for his game-changing spell with one saying:

"Mark Wood, what a display of fast hostile bowling. Take a bow sir, just fantastic."
"Pleasure to watch that spell from Mark Wood, scary pace and skill. He totally deserves this fifer," said a fan.
"An absolutely terrifying spell from Mark Wood!" a fan tweeted.

Mark Wood's brilliance helps England complete series whitewash

Mark Wood's fiery post-lunch spell finished West Indian hopes and helped England complete a 3-0 series whitewash. The visitors had conceded a 94-run first-innings lead but fought valiantly to reach 151/5 in their second innings.

Just as a lead of 57 appeared to be causing some worries in the English camp, Wood sniffed out any little hope the West Indies had of pulling out a morale-boosting win. After bowling the Caribbean side out for 175, the hosts had a comfortable run-chase of only 80.

Skipper Ben Stokes opened the batting due to an injury to regular opener Zak Crawley and butchered a 26-ball 51* to help England seal the deal by 10 wickets. It was a third consecutive convincing win for them after winning the first two Tests by margins of an innings and 114 runs and 241 runs.

As for the West Indies, the embarrassing series whitewash was a massive step back after their incredible win against Australia at Brisbane earlier this year.
