The Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament 2024 is currently being held in Sri Lanka. A total of eight matches were played on Saturday, June 22, across the island. It included four Group A fixtures and as many Group B fixtures.
The first match of Group A was a high-scoring thriller. The Sinhalese Sports Club scored 286 on the board after being asked to bat first, with Avishka Fernando top-scoring with 53. Ranmith Jayasena remained unbeaten on 79 for Ragama Cricket Club but they fell short by eight runs.
The second game saw the Tamil Union knock over the Chilaw Cricket Club on a paltry total of 168, with Ayana Siriwardhana picking up three wickets. Mohammed Shamaaz top-scored with 57* which helped Tamil Union chase down the total in 33 overs with four wickets in hand.
In the third game, the Panadura Sports Club’s batters faltered as they got knocked over on 161. Chamika Gunasekara and Lasith Embuldeniya grabbed three scalps each for the Nondescripts Cricket Club before they chased down the total comfortably in 32.5 overs.
A solid bowling effort saw the Ace Capital restrict the Bloomfield to 159/7 in a 27-overs-per-side contest. Skipper Thanuka Dabare scored a match-winning 73 at the top of the order for the Ace Capital.
In the first Group B clash, the Colts Cricket Club knocked over the Police Sports Club on 128, thanks to three wickets from Akila Dananjaya. In reply, the batters contributed and helped the Colts Cricket Club chase down the total with six wickets in hand.
The Nugegoda Sports Welfare Club’s bowlers wreaked havoc as they knocked over the Kandy Customs Cricket Club on 106 in 25.1 overs. In reply, they were 47/2 after nine overs before rain arrived and washed out the game.
Randunu Ganganath scored a fighting 65 but the other batters failed to get going as the Burgher Recreation Club finished their innings on 177/9. The Moors Sports Club chased down the total comfortably.
In a 49-overs-per-side contest, Chaturanga de Silva and Wanindu Hasaranga picked up three wickets each which helped Colombo Cricket Club knock over Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club on 103. Nishan Madushka scored a match-winning 45-ball 81 in the chase for the Colombo side.
