The group stage of the Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament 2024 came to a conclusion with seven matches (four Group A and three Group B fixtures) being played across seven Sri Lankan venues on Monday, August 5.

In the first Group A match of the day, Sinhalese Sports Club soared past Negombo’s 264-run total in the final over at the expense of eight wickets. Opener Sadisha Rajapaksa starred in the run-chase by cracking 75 off 92 balls. Meanwhile, Nondescripts Cricket Club overhauled Ace Capital Cricket Club by three wickets in a low-scoring thriller at Horana. Sahan Arachchige hogged the limelight for Nondescripts with both the bat and the ball, picking up figures of 4/24 and scoring a handy 39*.

The match between Chilaw Marians Cricket Club and Panadura Sports Club at Galle was called off owing to rains after the former made 157/7 in 42.5 overs. Ragama Cricket Club pummelled Tamil Union with six wickets and more than 10 overs to spare to cap Group A set of fixtures. Kalhara Senarathne excelled with the ball by claiming figures of 5/28, while captain Saminda Fernando top-scored with a run-a-ball 85 in the chase.

In Group B, Badureliya Sports Club bowlers Chanaka Komasaru (5/21) and Alankara Asanka Silva (3/12) enveloped the Colts for just 60 in 24.5 overs and secured a six-wicket win with nearly 38 overs to spare. At Katunayake, Moors Sports Club mowed down Kurunegala’s mere 120-run total by five wickets in 28.3 overs after Praveen Jayawickrama (3/30) and Rohan Sanjaya (3/18) bagged sensational three-wicket hauls.

Between Burgher and Nugegoda Sports Welfare Club, the former prevailed by a 23-run margin despite making just 204/9 upfront. After Murvin Abinash scored an unbeaten 96 for the Burgher, bowlers Chaminda Bandara (2/46), Dulaj Ashen (2/30) and Chameera Dissanayake (2/42) collectively demolished Nugegoda’s batting line-up.

Krishan Sanjula continues to top the run-scoring leaderboard of the Major Clubs Limited Over Tournament 2024 with 347 runs. Nishan Madushanka (336 runs), Pavan Rathnayake (332 runs) and Janishka Perera (319 runs) are the only other batters to have tallied over 300 runs this season.

Sandun Weerakkody, Yashodha Lanka and Ron Chandraguptha are ranked fifth, sixth and seventh on the run-scoring charts with 289, 285 and 279 runs, respectively. Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Ravindu Rasantha have both made 268 runs each to take the subsequent two slots on the table. Lahiru Udara, meanwhile, finds himself at number 10 on the batting charts with 267 runs.

Dilshan Munaweera and Lasith Embuldeniya take the top two slots on the season’s wicket-taking charts in that order with 16 scalps each to their credit. Chaturanga de Silva, Wanuja Sahan, Pasindu Ushettige, Chaminda Bandara, and Nishan Peiris have each snapped 15 wickets this season to take the subsequent five slots on the bowling table.

Kavika Dilshan, Kalhara Senarathne and Thanuka Dabare occupy the final three positions in terms of leading wicket-takers with 14 scalps each.
