Galle Marvels and Jaffna Kings met in the sixth match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 on Friday, July 5. The Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla hosted the encounter.

Jaffna Kings defeated Galle Marvels and jumped from third to first spot with four points. They currently boast a net run rate (NRR) of +0.186.

Meanwhile, Galle Marvels moved from the first to second with two wins in three games. They also have four points and a positive NRR of 0.033.

While Colombo Strikers descended from second to third, Kandy Falcons retained their fourth position with two points. The Strikers have an NRR of +1.100 and the Falcons have a negative NRR of -0.586.

Dambulla Sixers have lost both games so far and are currently languishing at the bottom of the LPL Points table, hoping to make a strong comeback in the next game against Jaffna Kings.

Azmatullah Omarzai's all-round brilliance guides Jaffna to first spot in the table

Galle Marvels batted first and set a challenging target of 188 runs, losing five wickets. Tim Seifert played a clinical knock of 104 not out, featuring 12 fours and six sixes, while Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Alex Hales added 28 and 23 runs each.

Azmatullah Omarzai of Jaffna Kings picked up two wickets while Pramod Madushan and Fabian Allen claimed one apiece.

In reply, Pathum Nissanka couldn't give the Jaffna Kings the ideal start, scoring just 12 runs at a strike rate of 109.09. However, Kusal Mendis and Rilee Russow solidified their position, with Mendis scoring 30 off 16 balls and Russow smashing 67 off 42.

As the match progressed, Maheesh Theekshana and Dwaine Pretorius disrupted the Kings' middle-order partnerships.

However, Jaffna skipper Charith Asalanka added 14 runs from eight balls, and Omarzai contributed significantly with 35 runs, including 16 crucial runs in the 20th over when 13 were needed, leading to a thrilling five-wicket victory for the Kings.

Zahoor Khan picked up two wickets for the Marvels while Theekshana, Pretorius, and Isuru Udana picked up one.
