Kandy Falcons registered a comprehensive seven-wicket win over the Jaffna Kings in the 11th match of the 2024 Lanka Premier League (LPL) on Tuesday, July 9. The Dambulla Sixers successfully defended their first-inning total against the Galle Marvels in the 12th game of the tournament.

Jaffna Kings are in first place in the 2024 Lanka Premier League (LPL) points table with six points in five matches. The Kings have won three games so far at a net run rate of +0.188.

Galle Marvels are in a similar boat as the Jaffna Kings with six points in five matches. However, an inferior net run rate of +0.030 places them in the second spot.

The Colombo Strikers occupy the third position on the points table with four points in four matches. The Strikers have won two and lost two games so far and have a net run rate of +0.290, the best at this point in the tournament.

Dambulla Strikers have accumulated four points in five games so far, with two wins and three losses. They are in the fourth position with a net run rate of -0.171. Meanwhile, the Kandy Falcons are last on the LPL leaderboard with four points in five matches and a net run rate of -0.302.


Kandy Falcons chase 224 to overcome Jaffna Kings

The Kandy Falcons chose to field first in the first LPL game of the day against the Jaffna Kings. Opener Pathum Nissanka scored a scintillating century to give the Kings the platform to set a massive target. Nissanka scored 119 off just 59 deliveries with an SR of 201.69, scoring 16 fours and four maximums.

Rilee Rossouw’s 18-ball 41 helped the Kings post a massive total of 224/7 in 20 overs. Dasun Shanka took 3/40 in four overs for Kandy, while Dushmantha Chameera and Ramesh Mendis took two wickets apiece.

Kandy batters Dinesh Chandimal (89 off 37) and Kamindu Mendis (65 off 36) made the target of 225 runs look like a walk in the park. They won the game with seven wickets and 10 balls to spare. Dinesh Chandimal batted at a blistering strike rate of 240.54, while Mendis scored his runs at an impressive strike rate of 180.56.

Dambulla Sixers batted first in the second game of the day against the Galle Marvels. Chamindu Wickremesinghe (56 off 34) scored for them at a strike rate of 164.71. Sixers posted a total of 160/8 in 20 overs, as Kavindu Neeshan (3/16) and Isuru Udana (2/16) were the highest wicket-takers for Galle.

In the end, the Marvels could only manage to put together 135/10 in 19.4 overs courtesy of an impressive bowling performance by the Sixers. Nuwan Thushara and Dushan Hemantha took three wickets each for the Sixers.
