Dambulla Sixers defeated Colombo Strikers in match 20 of the 2024 Lanka Premier League on July 16 at the R. Premadasa Stadium. The contest also marked the final league fixture of the tournament.

This was Dambulla Sixers’ third win of the season from eight outings as they finished at the bottom of the LPL 2024 points table. With as many wins and points as Kandy Falcons, the Sixers failed to qualify for the playoffs due to an inferior NRR of -0.269.

The Colombo Strikers, meanwhile, were denied a top-two finish after capitulating against the Sixers. They finished third on the points table with an NRR of 0.583, and will now face fourth-placed Kandy Falcons in the Eliminator on July 18.

Galle Marvels secured the top spot with 10 points courtesy of five wins from eight matches. Their NRR of -0.059 outweighs second-placed Jaffna Kings (-0.392). Galle Marvels and Jaffna Kings will fight it out for a direct place in the final in the first Qualifier on July 18.


Mohammad Nabi stars for Dambulla Sixers in low-scoring bout

Batting first, Dambulla Sixers lost openers Reeza Hendricks and Kusal Perera, alongside Nuwanidu Fernando and middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy all within the opening powerplay and eventually crashed to 38/5 in 7.1 overs.

Among the Colombo Strikers bowlers, Binura Fernando inflicted the most damage to Dambulla’s top-order by claiming figures of 3/15. His new-ball partner Isitha Wijesundara accounted for Hendricks in the second over of the match.

Following the dismissal of Mark Chapman at 38/5, captain Mohammad Nabi led Dambulla Sixers’ recovery with a cautious 62-run partnership with Chamindu Wickramasinghe (26 runs off 29 balls). Nabi top-scored with a 33-ball 40 before Matheesha Pathirana and Dunith Wellalage skittled out the Sixers for 123 in 20 overs.

Chasing 124 for a win and 47 runs to qualify for the playoffs, Colombo Strikers their top three batters in the first three overs of the innings. Captain Thisara Perera scored a fighting 30, but the Strikers were bowled out for 95 runs in 18.1 overs.

Nuwan Pradeep (3/20), Chamindu Wickramasinghe (2/13), Akila Dananjaya (1/18) and Mohammad Nabi (1/11) stole the show with the ball.

In what turned out to be a low-scoring dead rubber, Dambulla Sixers secured a 28-run win to finish their disappointing LPL 2024 season with a consolatory victory.
