The 2024 Lanka Premier League came to a conclusion with a high-octane final between Galle Marvels and Jaffna Kings on Sunday, July 21. Staged at the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the Jaffna Kings franchise catered themselves to a huge nine-wicket victory. As a result, they clinched their fourth LPL title and the first since bagging the 2022 edition.
Jaffna Kings fast bowler Jason Behrendorff struck early for his team by getting rid of both Galle Marvels openers in the first four overs of the match. Asitha Fernando also snapped Janith Liyanage as the Marvels slipped to 24/3 in 6.5 overs.
Tim Seifert punched out 47 runs from 37 balls to lead Galle Marvels recovery. Meanwhile, Bhanuka Rajapaksa smacked a belligerent 34-ball 82 with six sixes and eight boundaries. Even though Asitha Fernando struck thrice in his four-over spell, Rajapaksa’s blinder ensured Galle Marvels raced to 184/6 by the completion of their 20 overs.
Chasing 185, Jaffna Kings opener Kusal Mendis scored 72* from 40 balls. Moreover, number three Rilee Rossouw plundered an unbeaten 106 from 53 balls to steer their team to a nine-wicket win in the 16th over of the match.
LPL 2024 Most Runs List
Tim Seifert scored 47 in the final to bring up 400 runs in the LPL 2024 season. Finishing the tournament as its highest run-getter, he is followed by Jaffna Kings players Rilee Rossouw (389 runs) and Avishka Fernando (374 runs). Pathum Nissanka (333 runs) and Kusal Mendis (329 runs) complete LPL 2024’s five most successful batters.
Alex Hales and Andre Fletcher finished at number six and seven respectively with over 320 runs. Kusal Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, and Kamindu Mendis round up the top 10 list with 296 runs, 287 runs, and 286 runs respectively.
LPL 2024 Most Wickets List
Colombo Strikers bowlers Shadab Khan and Matheesha Pathirana finished the LPL 2024 season as the leading wicket-takers with 17 and 15 wickets respectively. Wanindu Hasaranga also scalped 15 wickets to be ranked third on the top 10 bowling list.
Galle Marvels’ Isuru Udana picked up 14 wickets from 10 innings to finish the tournament as its fourth most successful bowler. Binura Fernando, Dasun Shanaka, and Dwaine Pretorius all claimed 13 wickets each to occupy the next three slots. Dushan Hemantha bagged 11 wickets to finish at number eight while Fabian Allen and Maheesh Theekshana occupy the final two positions with 10 wickets each.
