The 16th match of the 2024 Lanka Premier League (LPL) ended in a thrilling tie, where the Galle Marvels took home the winning laurels via a Super Over. In the second match of the evening at the R. Premadasa Stadium on July 14, Colombo Strikers routed Jaffna Kings by nine wickets and with nearly 10 overs to spare.

Batting first in the first match, Galle Marvels notched up 148/9 from 20 overs largely owing to a valiant 26-ball 38 from in-form opener Alex Hales. Tim Seifert (23 off 29 balls) and Dwaine Pretorius (16 off 12 balls) also made handy contributions in the middle overs. However, they failed to mount up their scoring rate in front of Dambulla Sixers’ bowlers Dushan Hemantha (2/19), Mohammad Nabi (2/14) and Nuwan Pradeep (2/42).

Chasing 149, Dambulla Sixers opener Reeza Hendricks pounded 72 runs from just 57 balls at the top. However, his run-chase masterclass was toppled by Galle Marvels’ Maheesh Theekshana (3/26) in the final over as the match ended in a tie. In the resultant Super Over, Alex Hales launched a six and a boundary off three balls to grab two points for the Galle Marvels.

In match number 17 of the tournament, Colombo Strikers’ Shadab Khan collected figures of 4/10 to restrict Jaffna Kings' entire line-up to just 109/9 from 20 overs. Chasing 110 for a win, opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz made an unbeaten 57 off 33 balls. His knock guided the Colombo Strikers to a nine-wicket win with 10.1 overs to spare.
