"Kohli-Brook opening in Chinnaswamy" - Fans react to SRH releasing Harry Brook ahead of IPL 2024 auction

Brook endured a dismal maiden IPL season

England batter Harry Brook has been released by the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) as part of their final retentions on Sunday, November 26. The news comes ahead of the upcoming IPL 2024 auction in Dubai on December 19.

Brook was picked by Hyderabad at the IPL 2023 auction for a colossal ₹13.25 crore after winning the bidding war against the Rajasthan Royals and the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Considered a generational talent, the 24-year-old could not live up to his billing in his debut season.

Brook scored only 190 runs in 11 games at a dismal average of 21.11 and a strike rate of 123.38. The average drops further if his lone standout knock of 100* against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) gets excluded.

By releasing the youngster, SRH has increased their budget by a substantial amount to purchase other potential in-form stars like Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Rachin Ravindra, among others.

The Yorkshire cricketer had a poor ODI World Cup with only 169 runs in six games at a sub-30 average. Despite the obvious talent and the incredible Test record with an average of over 62, Brook has struggled in the white-ball formats for his national side and in his lone IPL season.

Yet, there were mixed reactions on Twitter, with several fans admitting releasing Harry Brook could prove costly in years to come, while others felt it was good riddance for SRH.

Here are the best reactions:

SRH release five other players apart from Harry Brook

Apart from Harry Brook, SRH released his England teammate Adil Rashid alongside Samarth Vyas, Kartik Tyagi, Vivrant Sharma, and Akeal Hosein.

While Samarth Vyas did not feature in a single game last season, Vikranth Sharma played three matches and scored a half-century. As for Karthik Tyagi, there were high expectations, but the pacer was disappointing, with a solitary wicket in three games at a horrendous economy rate of almost 15.

Meanwhile, the overseas spin duo of Rashid and Hosein played three games combined and picked up as many wickets without much impact. Following the release of six players, SRH has a purse of ₹34 crore left for the auction, with six slots remaining to fill up (3 overseas).

After a magnificent run of making the playoffs each time from 2016 to 2020, including being champions in 2016 and finalists in 2018, SRH has struggled massively over the last three seasons. The side finished at the bottom of the points table in 2021 and 2023.
