Sri Lanka have climbed to the 5th position in the WTC standings

Sri Lanka have climbed up from seventh to fifth position in the ICC World Test Championship points table. It comes after they secured an eight-wicket win in the final match of the series against England on Sunday, September 8.

The English team already gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series by winning the first two Tests. However, this Test was also important because of the WTC points up for grabs.

Sri Lanka brought their 'A' game to the table in the Kennington Oval Test and defeated England by eight wickets. Pathum Nissanks won the Man of the Match award for his half-century in the first innings and a fantastic 124-ball 127 in the second innings.

Thanks to this win, Sri Lanka now have 36 points from seven matches in the ongoing WTC cycle. With three wins and four defeats, the island nation's points percentage stands at 42.86%.

England have dropped down from fifth to sixth position in the ICC World Test Championship points table after the loss against Sri Lanka. Ollie Pope and Co. now have 42.19% points to their name after 16 matches in the WTC cycle.

Can India retain the 1st position in the ICC World Test Championship points table?

The next WTC series will be between India and Bangladesh, starting September 19 in Chennai. India are the table toppers right now, with 74 points after nine matches. The Indian team's points percentage stands at 68.52%.

Bangladesh will be high on confidence, having registered their maiden Test series win against Pakistan a few days ago. The Tigers have never won a Test series against India. It will be interesting to see if they can snap that winless streak as well.

India have not lost a single home Test series since 2012/13. Hence, it will be extremely challenging for Bangladesh to even give India a run for their money in the two-Test series.
