Former West Indian captain Brian Lara believes Yashasvi Jaiswal has the goods to succeed in the upcoming Test tour of Australia. The Trinidadian reckons all the youngster must do is back his talent and skills in the conditions and expect the runs to flow.

Jaiswal, who made his Test debut in 2023 during the West Indies tour, has enjoyed a stellar stint in the format. The southpaw has amassed 1217 runs only in 11 Tests, averaging 64.05 with three centuries. Jaiswal has forged a formidable opening stand with Rohit Sharma and is expected to perform the role Down Under.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the International Masters League in Mumbai on Tuesday (October 8), Lara claimed, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo:

"Obviously, the pitches in Australia are slightly different. But if you take your mentality, and if you take that sort of strength that you have, you're going to play good cricket in any conditions. I expect to see him (Jaiswal) do well. I think the adjustment is upstairs. The adjustment is the ability to back your talent in whatever conditions. I say this with a pinch of salt, because conditions in India have changed."

Jaiswal was especially prolific during the home series against England earlier this year as he slammed 712 runs in five Tests at an average of 89.

"I don't think there's much that he has to do technically" - Brian Lara

At the same time, the 55-year-old warned that facing Australia in their backyard is a whole different challenge, adding:

"With the IPL, you've got international players coming - and you're feeding your players a different level of competition, which is great. So I don't think there's much that he (Jaiswal) has to do technically. I just think mentally [he has to adjust]: travelling away from home, [and] playing against Australia; Australia, on their shores, are a different beast."

The marquee five-Test series between India and Australia begins on November 22 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
