“I admire his intent and enjoy watching him bat” - Uttar Pradesh batter Sameer Rizvi on Rohit Sharma

Uttar Pradesh cricketer Sameer Rizvi has expressed his admiration for Indian Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, whom he considers an idol. The 20-year-old was purchased by Chennai Super Kings for ₹8.40 crore ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League. The right-handed batter played eight matches and scored 51 runs across five innings.

Recently, Sameer appeared on YouTuber Shubhankar Mishra’s show Unplugged, where he was asked about the Indian player he idolizes. He shared his appreciation for Rohit Sharma’s approach to the game and the intent with which he plays, saying:

“My style of play is quite attacking, similar to how Rohit Bhaiya approaches the game. I admire his intent and enjoy watching him bat. He has a great strike rate; for instance, he scored 60 runs off 40 balls in the ODI World Cup, showcasing his aggressive play and intent. That’s something I really appreciate about him as a player.”

The 20-year-old last competed in the UP T20 League 2024, where he led the Kanpur Superstars. His team fell short in the final, losing to the Meerut Mavericks by five wickets.

Sameer emerged as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, accumulating 468 runs in 13 matches at an average of 42.55, with three fifties to his name.

Former T20I captain Rohit Sharma was exceptional in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which India won under his leadership. The Men in Blue triumphed over South Africa in the final, winning by seven runs to secure their second T20I title.

Throughout the tournament, Rohit was outstanding, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer. He accumulated 257 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 156.70, including three fifties.

The 37-year-old announced his retirement from T20I cricket after the tournament. He retired as the leading run-scorer in the format with 4,231 runs in 159 matches, with 32 fifties and five hundreds to his name.
