Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis has reportedly accepted the role of the advisor to Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi offered by the PCB. As per Cricbuzz, the former captain will begin his role from August 1 and will report directly to Naqvi.

A veteran of 87 Tests and 262 ODIs from 1989 to 2003, the 52-year-old has served as the bowling and assistant coach previously, but didn't have a successful run with the team. He will now have the responsibility of overseeing the national red-ball and white-ball teams and the national coaches. He will also monitor the selection committee, with two members of the same having been sacked recently.

According to Cricbuzz sources, Waqar Younis will also:

"Address any matters or assignments deemed appropriate by the PCB chairman that require his attention or expertise."

Additionally, the former captain's responsibilities might also include overseeing matters of domestic cricket, high-performance center, and curators. It is understood that the appointment is to allow the chairman to concentrate on issues relating to administration, governance, infrastructure, and commercial agreements.

The source also added:

"The PCB believed there was a need for an experienced individual who understands the language of cricketers and is capable of making the right decisions, which is why Waqar was brought on board."

The Men in Green will next square off in a two-Test series against Bangladesh, beginning on August 21 in Rawalpindi. Pakistan have a busy schedule until April 2025 as they face Bangladesh, England, and the West Indies at home.

They will tour Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Led by Babar Azam, the national men's team faced a group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 after losing to the USA and India.

Several reports have indicated that Babar's captaincy could come in danger following the team's disappointing performance.
