"Don’t see why I should stop" - Andre Russell keen on playing T20 World Cup 2026

Veteran West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell has declared his intention to play for two more years in the international arena and has targeted the next T20 World Cup. The seam-bowling all-rounder said he sees no reason to stop as he feels fitter than ever.

The Jamaican was part of West Indies' 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup-winning teams. The 36-year-old is currently part of the Trinbago Knight Riders' squad in CPL 2024. Although he has churned out only 56 runs in five matches, the veteran has a strike rate of 207.40. However, he has only managed a wicket in five innings.

With the West Indies set to play three T20Is in Sri Lanka, Russell said, as quoted by India Today:

"I definitely want to play the World Cup of 2026 because there is a lot of talent that you know could have. I could have walked away from the game international-wise but I just want to see the youngsters do well in terms of all-rounders. I still can hit the ball anywhere I want to hit the ball, still bowling at a good pace, still fit, can move around. I don’t see why I should stop."

The hard-hitting all-rounder last played for the national team during the T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa this year. The hosts lost the game and were eliminated from the tournament.

Russell also revealed speaking to coach Darren Sammy about stretching his career a bit more, adding:

"I’ve talked with Sammy and he said he wants me to keep playing some international cricket. And I think by looking around and seeing the talent that’s in the Caribbean, I think I’m going to push my body and push myself to play international cricket for another two years."

West Indies will play three ODIs and as many T20Is in Sri Lanka from October 13.
