Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn has confirmed he won't return as SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling coach for IPL 2025. The 41-year-old was named the SRH bowling coach ahead of the 2022 IPL season.

Steyn made himself unavailable for IPL 2024 due to personal reasons and SRH replaced him with former New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin. The franchise enjoyed a highly successful 2024 IPL campaign, finishing second on the points table and advancing to the final where it lost to eventual champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Taking to his X handle, Steyn posted:

"Cricket announcement. A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa. Two time winners here in SA20, let’s try make it THREE in a row."

As he confirmed in his post, Steyn will continue as one of the coaches for the SunRisers Eastern Cape (SEC) in the SA20.

The franchise triumphed under Aiden Markram's captaincy in the first two SA20 seasons. The 2025 season begins on January 9, and SEC will look to complete a hat-trick of title wins.

SRH struggled in the two seasons with Dale Steyn as bowling coach

SRH struggled with Dale Steyn as their bowling coach in IPL 2022 and 2023.

The side finished eighth in the 10-team race in the 2022 season and dipped further the following year. SRH endured a dismal 2023 campaign that saw them finish at the bottom of the table with only four wins in 14 outings.

It led to a major revamp in leadership, with Daniel Vettori replacing Brian Lara as head coach and Pat Cummins taking over as captain from Aiden Markram. The franchise immediately scripted a magnificent turnaround to finish runners-up in IPL 2024.

Dale Steyn also played for the Hyderabad franchise from 2011 to 2015 — the first two seasons with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers and the final three with SRH.
