Barbados Royals overcame St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in a tense run-chase in the ninth match of the CPL 2024 season at Warner Park. The outcome helped the Barbados Royals gain a spot to jump to number two on the points table with two wins from as many matches.

St Lucia Kings remain atop the six-team standings with a superior net run rate (NRR) of 1.503. Guyana Amazon Warriors slipped to number three at the expense of the Royals. The Warriors have accumulated four points, courtesy of two wins. However, their NRR of 1.075 places them below Barbados Royals and St Lucia Kings.

Trinbago Knight Riders remained at number four on the standings with a win and a defeat each from two fixtures. They have an NRR of 0.950. Antigua & Barbuda Falcons retained themselves at number five with just one win and four defeats and a dismal NRR of -0.687.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots failed to lift themselves as they continue to languish at the bottom after losing to the Royals. With just two points from five games, their NRR of -1.183 also marks the worst in CPL 2024.

Dunith Wellalage set up Barbados Royals' win with all-round brilliance

Batting first, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots lost each of their top three batters for two-ball ducks to Barbados Royals’ Sri Lankan spin imports Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage. While Mikyle Louis (30 off 20) and Wanindu Hasaranga (40 off 27) shaped valuable contributions to lead the Patriots' recovery in the middle overs, their successive dismissals once again tilted the tide back in the Royals' favor.

Josh Clarkson carved 24 runs off 32 balls for the Patriots while Ryan John simultaneously orchestrated the big-hitting with 29 off 14 in the slog overs. Their collective batting diligence set up a competitive total of 153/8 for the Patriots. Among the Royals bowlers, Dunith Wellalage unfurled the spell of the innings with figures of 3/35 while Hasaranga and Obed McCoy chipped in with two wickets each.

Chasing 154, Barbados Royals lost both openers to Kyle Mayers within the first five overs of the innings. Kadeem Alleyne clubbed three sixes in his 18-ball knock of 30 to regain momentum for the Royals, while Dunith Wellalage shaped a top-scoring act of 39 runs off 32 balls.

After slipping to a troublesome 126/6, Jason Holder and Nyeem Young unfurled match-defining cameos at the death to steer the Royals to a two-wicket win with a ball to spare.
