On Wednesday, July 3, a total of five matches were played in Round Nine of the County Championship Division One 2024. Worcestershire, Hampshire, Somerset, and Surrey won their respective games.

Surrey retained their first position after their second consecutive win. Meanwhile, Somerset moved from third to second, following a five-wicket victory over Warwickshire.

Essex slipped to third with four wins and three ties in nine games while Hampshire climbed occupied the next position by defeating Kent in the previous game with a six-wicket margin.

Nottinghamshire moved from sixth to fifth after tying their last match against Lancashire while Durham descended from fourth to sixth following a six-wicket loss against Worcestershire.

Lancashire tied their previous encounter and ascended from eighth to seventh while Warwickshire dropped to eighth.

Worcestershire, despite a victory over Durham, continues to languish in the bottom two positions with Kent, respectively.


Surrey continues to lead Division One as Somerset moves to second

Durham, despite a first-innings lead with 190, faltered in their second innings, managing only 152. However, Worcestershire defeated them by six wickets, thanks to Kashif's unbeaten 76 and Hose's 50, achieving 231/4 in their second innings. Taylor and Smith were crucial for Worcestershire, each taking four wickets.

Hampshire posted a massive 505/8 declared with James Vince smashing 211 and Ben Brown 110, putting Kent on the back foot. Kent responded with 343 in their first innings, with Leaning scoring 118 and Khushi contributing 53,

In their second innings, Kent were bowled out to 340 setting a 179-run target. However, Hampshire chased the target in 22.1 overs thanks to Liam Dawson’s 28-ball half-century.

Nottinghamshire and Lancashire drew in the 43rd match. Lancashire declared at 353 for 9, with Keaton Jennings scoring a commanding 183, while Lydon James took a four-fer.

Nottinghamshire replied with 126 in their first innings, Slater remaining unbeaten on 64, and James Anderson taking an impressive seven-wicket haul. They reached 270/4 in their second innings, thanks to Clarke's unbeaten 115 and James' 43, ultimately trailing by 143 runs.

Somerset secured a five-wicket victory over Warwickshire. Warwickshire scored 412 in their first innings with Michael Burgees’ 147. In reply, Somerset posted 284 in their first innings, led by Banton's 78 and Abell's 61, with Oliver Hannon-Dalby taking a six-fer.

Later, Warwickshire declared at 281/8 in their second innings, with Bethell (66), Yates (57), and Davies (50) contributing significantly. Somerset successfully chased 410 with five wickets in hand, thanks to Abell's unbeaten 152, Banton's 81, and Rew's 57*.

Surrey defeated Essex by 145 runs. Surrey scored 262 and 278 in their innings, with Ryan Patel hitting 135 and Jamie Smith 170. Essex replied with 180, Walter top-scoring with 64, while Jordan Clark and Daniel Worrall each took three wickets. Essex managed 215 in their second innings, with Dean Elgar scoring 60, but Tom Lawes' 4/26 sealed the win for Surrey.
