Australian all-rounder Cameron Green faces a race against time to be fit for the blockbuster five-Test series against India, beginning on November 22 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The towering all-rounder will play no further part in the ongoing ODI series against England as he was ruled out of the fourth game on Friday (September 27) at Lord's due to a back injury. He will return home for further assessment.
The youngster played a couple of matches and registered scores of 32 and 42 along with bowling 10 overs for two wickets. He likely suffered the injury during the third ODI at Chester-le-Street as England leveled the five-game series after losing the first two games.
The West Australian is arguably one of the first-choice players for the national team in Test cricket and moved up the order to No. 4 during the summer. The 25-year-old had a stellar tour of New Zealand earlier this year, headlined by striking 174 in the opening Test in Wellington that eventually culminated in a win.
The back injury could force him to miss the limited-overs leg at home against Pakistan in November.
"Not something I would say no to" - Cameron Green on opening in Test cricket
During a recent interview with Wisden Weekly Cricket Podcast, the all-rounder admitted that opening has always sounded a difficult proposition to him, but he is open to do it in the Test series against India. Green stated:
"I think it's totally up to Steve [Smith]. He's earned the right to bat where he wants to bat and whatever happens, I'm happy to move around him. He's a great of the game, and he's earned the right to bat where he wants to bat.
"You always want to put your hand up to play for Australia and I think opening would be a difficult one, but not something I would say no to. We'll have to see what the selectors decide to do, but at the same time I was open to do it six or nine months ago."
It was during the previous Test series at home against India that Green made his first international appearance.
