New Zealand lifted the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 trophy by beating South Africa by 32 runs in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, October 20. It was New Zealand's first World Cup victory in any format across both women's and men's cricket.

After being asked to bat first in the final, New Zealand notched up 158/5 in 20 overs on the back of contributions from Amelia Kerr (43), Brooke Halliday (38), and Suzie Bates (32). Nonkululeko Mlaba picked up two wickets in her four-over spell for the South Africans.

South Africa started the chase well as Laura Wolvaardt (33) and Tazmin Brits (17) stitched a 51-run opening partnership. However, things went south for them after the partnership was broken in the seventh over. Amelia Kerr (3/24) and Rosemary Mair (3/25) bowled brilliantly and chipped away with wickets at regular intervals to derail South Africa's chase.

"We probably let them score too many"- South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt after loss vs New Zealand in the final of ICC Womens T20 World Cup 2024

At the post-match presentation ceremony, South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt reflected on the disappointing loss and said:

"We had a really good semifinal. We wanted to rest and not get too ahead of ourselves. We just didn't play our best cricket tonight. They really came at us hard in the powerplay. At first I thought we could ride the wave and pick up a few wickets. But we probably let them score too many. We need to have a good reflection of what exactly happened. Half-way, we were backing ourselves to chase 150-odd."
"Definitely thought it was game on after the powerplay. But they put on the squeeze. 7-11 was not our best phase. Credit to New Zealand. We'll just keep building and hopefully have a good next World Cup. A really big thanks to our management. The hours and hours they spend, they don't get recognition for it. Also to the families who flew out, some last night," she added.

Laura Wolvaardt ended the T20 World Cup at the top of the run-scoring charts with 223 runs across six games at an average of 44.60, including a half-century.
