Team India reached 231/3 in their second innings at stumps on Day 3 of the first Test against New Zealand on Friday, October 18. New Zealand is still ahead in the match, as the hosts still trail by 125 runs at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

The Kiwis began the day with an overnight score of 180/3. Rachin Ravindra (134) hit a magnificent century and powered his team to 402 in the first innings. He weathered the storm in the morning session, playing sensibly against Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

He switched gears after spinners came into the attack and smashed them all over the park to notch up his second Test century. Tim Southee (65) supported him well with an aggressive half-century as New Zealand bagged a massive lead of 356 runs.

Rohit Sharma (52) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (35) gave India a solid start in their second innings with a 72-run opening partnership in 17.1 overs. Jaiswal perished in the 18th over, trying to attack the left-arm spinner, Ajaz Patel. Rohit continued to play positively at the other end and brought up his half-century, looking good for a big knock. However, he departed in the 22nd over in an unfortunate manner after the ball went back and hit the stumps after his defensive shot.

Virat Kohli (70) and Sarfaraz Khan (70*) then hit brilliant half-centuries and put on a 136-run partnership for the third wicket to continue India's fightback in the match. New Zealand finished the day on a high as Glenn Phillips dismissed Kohli on the final ball of the day.
