BCCI paid ₹2,038 crore GST during FY23, FY24; earnings from IPL increased by more than ₹5,000 crore in 2023

The BCCI is the biggest cricket board in the world and its balance sheet for the previous financial year proves the same.

According to a report by the Economic Times, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed the Rajya Sabha that the Indian cricket governing body paid ₹2,038 as Goods and Services Tax (GST) during FY23 and FY24. Overall, the board's income via media rights rose by 131%, standing at ₹8,744 crore.

Thanks to the new media rights deal with Star India and Viacom18, BCCI's total income from IPL 2023 surged to ₹11,769 crore. The board's 2022/23 annual report stated that total expenditure was also up by 66%, with the exact figure being ₹6,648 crore. Thus, BCCI earned over ₹5,000 crore from IPL 2023 alone.

For the unversed, in 2022, Star India secured the TV rights for IPL 2023 to 2027 at a price of ₹23,575 crore while Viacom18 bid successfully for the live streaming rights, paying a total of ₹23,758 crore for five seasons.

Apart from that, the board also sold the title rights of IPL to Tata Sons, valuing it at ₹2,500 crore for five seasons. Associate sponsorship deals with My11Circle, RuPay, AngelOne and CEAT fetched an additional ₹1,485 crore for the board.

How much did BCCI earn from Women's Premier League?

While almost every cricket fan knows about the massive revenue that the IPL generates, some may be unaware that the newly launched Women's Premier League has been a profitable tournament for the Indian board.

WPL helped the board earn ₹636 crore through media rights while incurring ₹259 crore expenditure to conduct the tournament's inaugural season in 2023. Overall, the board generated a surplus of approximately ₹377 crore from the WPL.

The report concluded by stating that at the end of FY 23, the board had ₹10,991.29 crore as fixed deposits. The board's bank balance stood at ₹16,493.2 crore.
