Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will take charge of the men's team in place of Marcus Trescothick for the third and final Test against Sri Lanka at The Oval. Trescothick will take a short break before linking up with the white-ball squad ahead of the white-ball series against Australia, beginning on September 11.

Flintoff was a part of England's coaching staff during T20 World Cup 2024 but will not be with the national team for the series against Australia. The 79-Test veteran had his first experiece as a coach in The Hundred this year, with the Northern Superchargers, who narrowly missed out on qualification after finishing fourth.

Flintoff is likely to link up with the Test squad on Wednesday for the first of two training days. Nevertheless, the 46-year-old is only with the team on a short-term basis and will not travel with them for the winter tours of Pakistan and New Zealand.

Marcos Trescothick has said that he's yet to apply for the role of England's white-ball coach and wishes to see how the series against Australia goes, telling Sky Sports:

"I'm still very focused on the batting stuff with the Test team. I'm going to let this play out and see what happens for this period of time, and see how much I enjoy doing the head coach's role and then go from there really. I'm quite open to the idea of seeing what's going to happen."

Trescothick also hinted at Jos Buttler giving up the keeping gloves in the series against Australia.

"It's definitely something we'll think about because we can try different options, give it a go for a period of time and see what reaction it has on his captaincy and on the team.
"For whatever reason, there were a tough couple of World Cups that they had in the meantime and we've come out of those not feeling too great about our one-day cricket."

Captained by Buttler, the T20I squad has five uncapped players.
