West Indies took on Afghanistan in the 40th match of the 2024 T20 World Cup on Tuesday, June 18, at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia. Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bowl.
West Indies lost their first wicket in the form of Brandon King in the second over of their innings. The other batters did exceptionally well. The next four batters had a strike rate of around 150. Nicholas Pooran emerged as the highest scorer and finished with 98 runs off 53 deliveries.
West Indies posted a total of 218 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. Gulbadin Naib was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan and took two wickets for 14 runs in two overs.
Afghanistan lost the wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the very first over. Only two batters managed to make more than 20 runs. Ibrahim Zadran amassed the most runs for the team and made 38 runs off 28 deliveries. Afghanistan were bundled out for 114 runs and lost the match by 104 runs.
