New Zealand secured a seven-wicket win against Papua New Guinea in the 39th match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad.

After a long rain delay initially, PNG was tasked to bat first. They huffed and puffed to 78 runs in 19.4 overs. In the process, Lockie Ferguson became the first-ever bowler to bowl four maidens, picking up three wickets.

Charles Amini was the top-scorer, smacking 17 runs in 25 balls with two fours while Trent Boult, Tim Southee, and Ish Sodhi scalped two wickets apiece in the first innings.

In reply, Finn Allen bagged a two-ball duck. Rachin Ravindra also followed suit, scoring six runs. Devon Conway looked exceptional in the middle, accumulating 35 runs in the chase.

After his dismissal, Kane Williamson (18*) and Daryl Mitchell (19*) scored important runs to seal the deal for their side in 12.2 overs with seven wickets in hand.

Afghanistan's opening batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz smacked 167 runs to lead the run-scoring charts. Marcus Stoinis (156) and Travis Head (148) retained their second and third ranks respectively.

Aaron Jones (141), Brandon McMullen (140), George Munsey (124), and Babar Azam (122) maintained their fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh ranks respectively.

David Warner (116), Ibrahim Zadran (114), and Mohammad Rizwan (110) continued to stay at the eighth, ninth, and 10th ranks respectively.

Fazalhaq Farooqi maintained his top spot in the wicket-taking charts, scalping 12 wickets. New Zealand ace pacer Trent Boult ascended from the eighth to the second rank with nine scalps at 6.55.

Anrich Nortje (9), Tanzim Hasan Sakib (9), and Adam Zampa (9) slid one spot each to secure the third, fourth, and fifth ranks at 7.77, 8, and 10.44 respectively.

Alzarri Joseph (8) and Nuwan Thusara (8) slipped one slot each to make it to the sixth and seventh ranks at 7.37 and 7.5 respectively. Tim Southee (7) rocketed from the 23rd to the eighth rank at 5.14.

Akeal Hosein (7) and Mustafizur Rahman (7) descended two spots apiece to occupy the ninth and 10th positions at 5.85 and 7.71 respectively.
