South Africa have put their one step into the semifinal spot after they recorded an emphatic win over defending champions England in Match 45 of the T20 World Cup 2024. They are now top of Group 2 with two out of two wins.

After being put to bat first, South Africa got off to a flying start thanks to a brilliant knock by Quinton de Kock. The Proteas opener, who was struggling in the initial matches, blazed away with a 38-ball 56 and laid the foundation for their batting.

David Miller then hammered 43 due to which South Africa recorded 163/6. Jofra Archer continued his wicket-taking spree as he bagged three scalps.

South Africa bossed the game in the second innings as well when they reduced the Three Lions to 61/4 in 10.2 overs. However, it was Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone, who tore apart the Protea bowlers as they added 78 in 42 balls. Brook top-scored 53 (37). England needed 14 runs in the last over but Anrich Nortje held his nerve to see his side through.

With this, South Africa recorded their sixth consecutive triumph in this edition. They now have 4 points in the Super 8 stage and have a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.625. Their remaining match is against the West Indies on June 24.

England, meanwhile, won their first game against the Windies but have now recorded a loss. They are at second, with two points at an NRR of +0.412. England will face the USA next, in what will be a must-win match for both teams.

An action-packed Saturday (June 22) awaits cricketing fans. The day will begin with a do-or-die clash between the two co-hosts, the West Indies and the USA. Both teams have lost their opening Super 8 stage clash and another defeat would eliminate them from the competition.

The second game, meanwhile, will feature Team India and neighbors Bangladesh in Match 47. India won their last game rather comfortably against Afghanistan and another win would make them favorites to claim a semifinal berth. Bangladesh also recently lost to Australia. Thus, the pressure would greatly be on Najmul Hossain Shanto's side.
