Sri Lanka have jumped to the fifth position in the 2023 World Cup points table after a thumping eight-wicket win over England at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday (October 26). It is the second consecutive win for the Sri Lankan team in this competition.

Playing in Bengaluru, Sri Lanka performed brilliantly with the ball and bowled England out for just 156 runs. An unbeaten 137-run third-wicket partnership between Sadeera Samarawickrama and Pathum Nissanka helped the Sri Lankan side chase down the 157-run target in just 25.4 overs.

Courtesy of this win, Sri Lanka have moved up to fifth position from seventh in the 2023 World Cup points table. They now have four points to their name after five matches. Their net run rate has improved from -1.048 to -0.205 after the big win against England.

Here are the updated standings:

England have dropped from eighth to ninth position after losing against Sri Lanka. The defending champions have had a forgettable tournament so far. They have only two points in their account after five matches, and it seems highly unlikely that England will qualify for the semifinals.

The defending champions' net run rate has come down to -1.634 from -1.248 after the loss against Sri Lanka. Only the Netherlands are below them in the table.

South Africa can become the number 1 team in the 2023 World Cup points table tomorrow

The 2023 World Cup action will return to Chennai tomorrow (October 27), where former champions Pakistan will take on South Africa. The Proteas are currently second in the standings with eight points from five matches. If they win against Pakistan tomorrow, they will replace India as the number one team in the standings.

Meanwhile, Pakistan are in a do-or-die situation right now. Sri Lanka's win has pushed them down to the sixth position in the table. They will have to beat the Proteas to stay alive in the tournament.
