What's the story?

The player auction for the 2019 IPL took place at Jaipur yesterday and, as is the case often, it finished as one of the most unpredictable evenings of the year. Several unknown players earned big in the auction while some mighty names of the cricket world did not attract any buyers.

One of those big names was that of discarded Indian batsman Manoj Tiwary.

In case you didn't know...

Manoj Tiwary had won the Indian Premier League as a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad in the year 2012, and since then, he has played for numerous IPL teams. After being released by KKR in 2013, he played for Delhi Daredevils for 2 years before playing for the Rising Pune Supergiant and Kings XI Punjab later on.

The heart of the matter

Manoj Tiwary was a part of the first set of batsmen in the auction and was amongst the first players to be a part of the auction. He had a base price of Rs. 50 lakhs but failed to attract any bids from the franchises. Even in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the auction, none of the franchises showed interest in Tiwary as the former Indian middle-order batsman remained unsold.

Manoj expressed his disappointment over this and took a dig at the BCCI and the franchises via Twitter. The Bengali batsman is certainly finding it difficult to digest the fact that he will not be a part of the IPL in 2019 as seen in the tweet above.

What's next?

With the World Cup just being played after the IPL, a player like Manoj Tiwary could have been a valuable addition to any squad. Hence, it is surprising that Tiwary remained unsold in the auction. What the future holds for Tiwary in the IPL is unknown at the moment, perhaps he can become a part of the tournament as a replacement for any player who gets injured in the season.
