IPL 2017: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Gujarat Lions, Player Ratings

Warner’s 45 ball 76 was instrumental in Hyderabad’s win

The Afghan leggie Rashid Khan continued his impressive run and Australia’s David Warner returned to form as the 2016 IPL winners Sunrisers Hyderabad recorded a nine-wicket win against depleted Gujarat Lions at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday.

The hosts cruised to the 136-run target in only 15.3 overs as their skipper sealed his team's victory with a six.

Warner top-scored with an unbeaten 76 while Moises Henriques contributed with 52 not out. Here’s the rating of all the players from today’s game.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Shikhar Dhawan – 1/10

The low target that the Sunrisers Hyderabad were chasing could have been an ideal platform for Shikhar Dhawan to regain form and score some runs. He hit a six initially but got out in a soft fashion off a full toss.

David Warner – 9.5/10

Warner was excellent on the field with bowling changes and field placements. He was also brilliant with the bat, and hit himself back to form with a 45 ball 76. The attack began in the third over when skipper Suresh Raina introduced himself into the attack.

The Aussie lofted him straight into the sight screen and followed it with another one into the long-on region. Warner was in a devastating form.

Moises Henriques – 7/10

Henriques conceded 12 runs in the only over he bowled but came back in the run chase to steer his side to an easy win with his second successive half-century.

Ben Cutting – 2/10

On a day where his teammates shone with the ball, Cutting was off-color and was expensive with the ball. With Warner and Henriques getting the job done, Cutting’s services with the bat were not required.

Bipul Sharma – 5.5/10

Sharma did just what was required of him. He was given the new ball to contain the strong lineup and he delivered by conceding only 24 off his 4 overs.

Ashish Nehra – 6/10

Nehra was used by Warner in one over spells. Even though he leaked a few runs at the start, he pulled things back in the end and got the vital wicket of Dinesh Karthik.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar 7.5/10

Kumar was brilliant as usual. He conceded a couple of boundaries to Jason Roy in his first over but came back strong to get rid of the Englishman and bowled two tight overs at the death dismissing Dwayne Smith in the process.

Rashid Khan was star of the show

Rashid Khan – 9-10

Rashid Khan was the star of the show during the Lions’ innings. He took on the intimidating batting line-up and managed to prize away the trio of McCullum, Finch and Raina. He even troubled an in-form Dinesh Karthik, and all that in his maiden IPL foray. His googly to Finch and McCullum was a testament to his brilliant thinking.

Yuvraj Singh – N/A

Deepak Hooda – N/A

Naman Ojha – N/A

Gujarat Lions

Smith was the best batsman on the day for the Lions

Brendon McCullum – 1/10

The former New Zealand international struggled to get going from the very beginning of the innings. His body language showed lack of confidence; he failed to read Rashid khan and eventually got trapped plumb in front by the leggie.

Against KKR, McCullum notched four boundaries and two sixes to score 35 off just 24 balls, falling LBW to Kuldeep Yadav. However, the Afghan sensation proved too good for him.

Jason Roy – 6/10

The English cricketer looked in the zone right from the start, hitting boundaries at regular intervals. Had he stayed at the crease longer than he did, he might have gone on to make a big score. But a smart catch from Shikhar Dhawan sent him back.

Aaron Finch – 1/10

Aaron Finch was another player who failed to read Rashid and got dismissed on 3. Perhaps the move to play him in the middle order is not paying off. Gujarat Lions should let him open the innings to get better results.

Suresh Raina – 1/10

The Lions’ captain, who is one of the better players of spin in his side, was seen struggling throughout his short stay on the crease. He didn’t want to take too many chances against the Afghanistan leggie, and stuck to taking singles and doubles. But he was soon dismissed by Rashid LBW.

Dinesh Karthik – 5/10

The man in form began in decent fashion and anchored the innings after early jolts but fell in the end before he could shift the gears.

Dwayne Smith – 6.5/10

Smith was the best batsman on the day for the Lions. He came out to the crease when his side was reeling following Rashid’s strikes but he took the attack to the opposition despite not playing in his usual spot. He got dismissed at the wrong time though.

Praveen Kumar – 4.5/10

Praveen Kumar had a chance to make an impact with the bat towards the end but made only 7 off 7 and then took the only wicket the Lions have picked up so far in two matches combined.

Shivil Kaushik – 4/10

Only Shivil’s mystery spin could have given his side some hope but the opposition batsmen were well-set and milked him for 29 runs off his quota.

Dhawal Kulkarni – 2/10

Defending just 135, Kulkarni didn’t have enough runs behind him to make an impact and bowled only two overs as a result. In his two overs, he gave away 17 runs.

Tejas Baroka – 1/10

Tejas has a debut that he would not like to remember for a long time. It is never easy to bowl to a rampaging Warner and the debutant was given a lesson by the Australian skipper. The youngster who has not been considered good enough to be a part of Delhi stateside was at the receiving end.

Basil Thampi – 2.5/10

Struck a six late in the innings but by the time he was brought into the attack, the game was done and dusted. He gave away 21 runs from his 2 overs, unable to make any impact whatsoever.
