Siechem Madurai Panthers will take on Salem Spartans in the third match of TNPL 2024 to begin their campaign this season. The eighth season of Tamil Nadu Premier League is scheduled to start on Friday, July 5.
Eight teams representing eight cities of Tamil Nadu will fight it out to win the coveted trophy. The team from Madurai won the TNPL for the first time in 2018 after finishing in the last place in their first two attempts. Since then, they have qualified for the playoffs thrice in the last four seasons but are yet to get their hands on the TNPL trophy.
They won four out of seven matches last season to finish in fourth place. The Panthers lost the Eliminator match against the Nellai Royal Kings, ending their campaign on a sad note.
They retained 13 players, including skipper Hari Nishaanth, before entering the TNPL 2024 auction. They had also retained the services of Murugan Ashwin.
The Panthers paid INR 6 lakh for Chaturved NS and INR 5.2 lakh for Sasidev U. Alexandar R cost them INR 1.5 lakh. These were the three most expensive buys for the franchise.
Hari Nishaanth is one of the most successful batters in the TNPL. He has amassed 1450 runs in 53 matches at an average of 29.6 and a strike rate of 126.9. Murugan Ashwin has taken 51 wickets in 49 matches in the TNPL at an average of 24.6, an economy of 7.14, and a strike rate of 20.7. Chaturved NS, the 33-year-old batter, has made 1035 runs so far in 47 matches in the TNPL at a strike rate of 131.2.
Sasidev U is another batter with a strong record and has scored 997 runs in 52 matches at a strike rate of 120. The inclusion of Alexandar R will strengthen the spin bowling attack of the Panthers. He has taken a total of 53 wickets in 52 matches at a strike rate of 19.1.
