Mangaluru Dragons have appointed a new captain in the form of Shreyas Gopal for the Maharaja T20 Trophy 2024 season. Back in 2023 under the leadership of Krishnappa Gowtham, the Dragons sustained six defeats from 10 matches and finished the season at number five on the six-team points table.
In dire need of an improved performance this time around, the Mangaluru Dragons franchise made some radical changes to the squad composition. Apart from making several additions during the auction held on July 25, the franchise retained only four cricketers, including prolific opening batter Rohan Patil and middle-order batter Krishnamurthy Siddharth. Nikin Jose and Paras Gurbax Arya were the other two retentions made by the Dragons team management prior to the auction.
Among new additions, the franchise shelled out the most on spin-bowling all-rounder and current Mumbai Indians star Shreyas Gopal. Moreover, the Mangaluru Dragons also appointed Gopal as their new skipper going ahead.
Left-arm fast bowler Abhilash Shetty, who represented the Gulbarga Mystics team last year, was another cricketer who set the cash registers ringing at the auction. Mangaluru Dragons acquired the services of the speedster for a staggering sum of Rs. 6.3 lakhs.
The Dragons management also fuelled its youth contingent by adding fellow fast bowling sensation Samarth Nagaraj and left-arm spinner Lankesh KS. Macneil Hadley Noronha, a 22-year-old all-rounder, played alongside Abhilash Shetty for the Gulbarga Mystics last year. He is now set for a franchise transition as he takes the field for the 2024 edition of the prestigious Maharaja Trophy T20.
