The Lanka Premier League returns for its fifth season hosted by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). This edition is all set to begin on Monday, July 1, and shall conclude on Sunday, July 21. The final shall be played in R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
The League shall be played in a double round-robin format, with a total of 24 matches being played at three venues. Five teams are participating in the tournament: B-Love Kandy, Dambulla Sixers, Jaffna Kings, Galle Marvels, and Colombo Strikers. After their poor performance last season, the Strikers shall get a new captain, with Thisara Perera taking the lead.
Colombo Strikers shall begin their campaign on the second day of the season, July 2, against the defending champions B-love Kandy. Babar Azam was the highest scorer for the Strikers last season with 261 runs but he shall not participate in the tournament this season. Matheesha Pathirana was the standout bowler for his franchise, taking 12 wickets.
The Colombo Strikers retained four of their players from last season. Matheesha Pathirana is one of them. He was retained after his huge auction through the RTM card, which also made him being the most expensive player being in the Lanka Premier League. He also had a wonderful season for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024, picking up 13 wickets in just six games.
The Lanka Premier League also introduces a new feature of power blast in overs number 16 and 17, during which only four fielders will be allowed outside the ring, this shall generate a lot of excitement for the fans and as well as players.
Colombo Strikers are coming back with a powerhouse team, having experienced players from the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. They will have the services of Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who finished as the top scorer in the World Cup 2024 with 281 runs from eight outings. Colombo Strikers are a team to watch out for this season and it will be interesting to see how the players go about their business.
