Veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali announced his retirement from international cricket on Sunday, September 8, after being left out of the squad for the upcoming home series against Australia. The 37-year-old had initially retired from Test cricket in 2021 but reversed his decision ahead of the 2023 Ashes series on home soil.

Moeen represented England in 68 Tests, scoring 3,094 runs and picking up 204 wickets. He also played 138 ODIs, accumulating 2,355 runs and 111 wickets. Additionally, he featured in 92 T20Is, where he scored 1,229 runs and claimed 51 wickets.

He made his England debut in an ODI against the West Indies in February 2014 in North Sound. Asked to bat first, the West Indies posted 269 runs, thanks to half-centuries from Lendl Simmons (65), Dwayne Bravo (87*), and Darren Sammy (61). Moeen Ali picked up only one wicket.

In reply, Michael Lumb scored a century (106), but England fell short, finishing at 254/6 in their 50 overs and losing by 15 runs.

In this article, we will look at what the England XI from Ali’s debut game is up to now in their respective lives.

Top order: Michael Lumb, Moeen Ali, and Luke Wright

Michael Lumb, who scored a century in the match, represented England in three ODIs and 27 T20Is. He retired from international cricket in 2017 and now serves as the Vice President of the Wasserman Cricket Group.

Moeen Ali scored 44 runs and picked up one wicket in his debut game. His last appearance for England was in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final against India. He announced his retirement on September 8 after being excluded from the white-ball series against Australia at home.

Luke Wright had a disappointing performance in the game, managing only one run. He represented England in 50 ODIs and 51 T20Is before announcing his retirement from all formats in November 2022. Wright now serves as a selector for the England Men’s cricket team.

Middle-order/all-rounders: Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Ravi Bopara

Joe Root scored 37 runs in the match. The 33-year-old is currently playing in the ongoing Test series between England and Sri Lanka. During the second Test of the series, he overtook Sir Alastair Cook to become the England player with the most Test centuries (34).

Ben Stokes had a disappointing performance, scoring just five runs. The current England Test captain is absent from the Sri Lanka series due to a hamstring injury he sustained during The Hundred tournament.

Jos Buttler also had a lackluster performance in the game against the West Indies, scoring just 12 runs. The current England white-ball captain last played in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final against India. He will miss the upcoming T20I series against Australia due to a calf injury.
